3/18/06 Belue Farm Slough Cleanup:
 This
slough on the Elk River in West Limestone was full of glass, plastic
and debris which have accumulated over time. Where did the
trash come from?...litter thrown into the ditches along our roadways
wash into streams which flow to our rivers. This trash along
with litter tossed by careless boaters, fisherman, farmers, and
others washes down river and becomes trapped in the sloughs.

A few caring people, 4-5 hours of time, hundreds of trash bags
provided by KALB, drinks donated by Pepsi, and a wonderful
transformation takes place. 1300 lbs. of glass and countless
bags of plastic and other debris were removed from this site.
Every piece of trash in this slough and hundreds of others had human
help getting there. These men and woman have taken a piece of
Alabama and returned it to Alabama the Beautiful, and they will
enjoy the sight as they ride the trails along this river.
This trash was carried out of the slough and loaded
onto a waiting boat provided by The Boat House in Athens. It
was then carried back and unloaded onto a waiting District 4 litter
trailer. From there it was transported to the BFI transfer
station. It was quite an ordeal, but well planned. Thank
you to all who helped with time, donations, and in-kind services.
