KALB Programs

Great American Cleanup:

The GREAT AMERICAN CLEANUP is a national grassroots event sponsored by Keep America Beautiful, of which we are an affiliate.

KALB sponsors the Limestone County events. Included in this event are roadside and river cleanups, aluminum can recycling bash, clothing drive, and an expo providing educational materials to the public.

KALB needs interested individuals and groups to organize neighborhood, roadside, and river cleanups.  It won't get done without you.  KALB will provide bags, gloves, litter pick up sticks, and beverages to participating groups.  Please consider getting involved.

Click here for Details which includes info on all this and the Free Dump Day!

Student Litter Programs)

Student Litter Patrol Officers (K-4th)  This program educates students K-4 on the dangers of litter and the effects on our community. After discussion, students are invited to become official Litter Patrol Officers working for the Chief of Police and  Sheriff. After being sworn in, these officers are charged with reminding parents, family, and friends that they should not litter -- IT'S A CRIME!

Litter Evaluation (2nd-6th)    Students are broken into small groups and asked to put litter items in order from least to most dangerous.  Discussion follows.  This may be the first time these students have given thought as to what happens AFTER litter is discarded.  There are no right or wrong answers....just thought-provoking discussion.

For other environmental programs, curricula, and our lending program, see TeachersPage.html

Don't just sit there and complain!  DO SOMETHING ABOUT LITTER!

Litter Watch Program (Driving Age)

Litter Watch is such an important program and there  no risk.   KALB enlists the help of citizens to watch for littering offenses by drivers or their passengers. Witnessed incidents are reported to KALB and we, in turn, report the incident to the appropriate law enforcement agency. A stern warning letter is sent to the offender along with educational materials. This is all done with no risk to the person reporting the incident, as his/her name is kept confidential by law enforcement agencies.

Fiddlers before it was made a Litter Free Event

The grounds of Fiddlers as a Litter Free Event in 2007

Litter Free Events

This is one of KALB's most successful programs.  As you can see by the photos, the litter created during a Fiddler's Convention before we made this event litter free was tremendous.  The Litter Free Event system works, as evidenced by the picture of the grounds AFTER this event was made litter free.  We have seen this kind of success at every event where the Litter Free Event system was applied properly.

KALB works with schools, city and county officials, civic clubs, and individual citizens to help make their events litter free. Annually, Athens hosts a Christmas Parade,  the Old Time Fiddler's Convention, Art on the Square, Storytelling Festival, Dogwood Festival, Sheriff's Rodeo, and Soustock (an outdoor free concert).  Soon we will add Delmore Days  to that list!  These events have been hosted as litter Free events and the litter problems have reduced dramatically.  This important program teaches young and old alike to be immediately responsible for their own litter.

Sparky and the Talking Tree

These two mascots are available to visit city and county schools and youth organizations to talk about litter, recycling, and the importance of trees and other plant life.

Sparky encourages the children to help him teach others the dangers of littering by working with his "helper" to explain how harmful litter can be to people, animals, and habitats.

The Talking Tree helps children understand  the many ways trees work in harmony with nature to keep our planet cool, the air clean, provide food and shelter, and our world a nicer place to live.

Both programs include handouts to reinforce the lesson after the presentation.  To schedule Sparky or the Talking Tree to visit your class or youth group, contact us.
